Conisbrough Castle
Standing tall for over 800 years: Climb to the top of the keep for panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. As you explore the keep’s three big chambers and lovely miniature chapel you’ll be guided by larger-than-life wall-projected figures. Vivid, graphic novel-style interpretation guides you round the whole fortress, featuring builders, servants, ladies-in-waiting and squires from the castle’s past. The introductory exhibition traces Conisbrough’s story from its beginnings to the present day, telling how the castle gained fame as the setting of Walter Scott’s smash-hit Regency novel, Ivanhoe. A cutaway model offers a virtual tour of the keep if you don’t want to climb the stairs. ‘Conisbrough’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘Cyningesburh’, meaning ‘the king’s borough’. Little is known of the site before the Norman Conquest, but Conisbrough town was certainly important long before then: a major Anglian church, now the church of St Peter, stood here, probably as early as the 8th century, and is the oldest standing building in South Yorkshire.

Don Valley Cycles opened its doors on June 7th 1993. Founded by former Great Britain cyclist, Martin Maltby, the shop fast became a hub for local cyclists, and main sponsor for the Doncaster Wheelers Cycling Club. Today, the shop employs a team of dedicated, passionate staff, and provides advice, guidance and support to riders of all levels and abilities in Doncaster and surrounding areas. More than just a bike shop, Don Valley Cycles has been at the heart of the cycling community locally for 30 years. The shop is one of the main sponsors of Doncaster Wheelers Cycling Club, a club that caters for riders of all levels and abilities, from young riders learning to ride bikes to veterans with decades of racing and riding experience. Launching in 2014, Martin and the team at Don Valley Cycles have been involved in planning and running the Doncaster Cycle Festival, the town’s biggest cycling event.

The Trolleybus Museum
There’s lots to do, making the Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft a great family day out for all ages! By the end of the 1960s only three operational British trolleybus systems remained. Throughout the decade groups of enthusiasts around the country had realised that this mode of transport was fast disappearing and had set about saving examples. Their immediate problem was where to keep these historic vehicles; a secondary aim was to set up a working museum where the public could enjoy the trolleybus’s unique characteristics. In 1969 several of these groups came together, and through the generosity of the mother of one of them, Mike Dare, a young schoolteacher from Reading, the original 4-acre site at Sandtoft was purchased and The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft was founded. The first trolleybus (Reading 193) arrived in November 1969. Others quickly followed and today the Museum’s collection numbers 56 trolleybuses, 15 motorbuses and several other associated vehicles. It wasn’t just vehicles that were collected. Over the following 3 years the last systems closed down and much equipment was salvaged so that the Museum’s running circuit could be erected. In 2008, 1.2 acres of land to the north and north west of the site (including the current car park) was bought; in 2017 the British Trolleybus Society bought “Burntwood”, the bungalow to the west of the original site with its associated land which butts up to the 2008 purchase. The following year, using a generous bequest from a member, we were able to acquire a strip to the west of these additions.
