Yorkshire Water has begun a £1.2 million project replacing around 3.1 kilometres of ageing water mains near Doncaster.
Work is taking place around the A161 and Woodhouse Road and is intended to make supplies more reliable while reducing the risk of leaks and interruptions.
Much of the project will be carried out using temporary traffic lights.
It forms part of Yorkshire Water's wider multi-billion-pound investment programme in its clean-water network up to 2030.
